Life Skills Education
Life doesn't come with an instruction book. To help active duty military members (single or married) and their families enhance their effectiveness at home and work, Fleet & Family Support Center professionals offer Life Skills services and programs that foster good relations, healthy families, and strong marriages.

Communication is powerful and directly affects our quality of life and interpersonal relationships. Our ability to express what we think while respecting how others think and feel is the greatest factor of success in our work and home life. Yet, communication is an everyday activity that is easily taken for granted and frequently misunderstood. This workshop helps people use the power of communication to strengthen relationships at work and at home by practicing skills that build effective two-way communication.
This course is one-hour long and is an activity-rich course. At the completion of this course, participants should be able to use the power of effective communication as a vehicle for enhancing relationships at work and at home.
The course consists of:
- Two-Way Communication
- Strategic “Relationship-Focused” Communication
- Communication Barriers
Stress is a fact of life and the military culture presents some unique stressors of its own. FFSC has two stress management options for military members and their families who are experiencing stress.
The first is a four-session stress management class that will help learners define what stress looks like and measure the effects stress has on your health, relationships, and work performance. These sessions will provide opportunities for learners to create strategies to reduce stress and bring balance to the work and family life.
This is an activity-rich course. Each session builds upon the models learned in the previous session, increasing knowledge and tools for managing stress. Sessions last two hours and upon completion of this course, participants should be able to establish personal accountability strategies to reduce stress in their work and home life.
This Stress Management 4-Part Series consists of:
- Introduction/Operational Stress Control
- Transforming Negative Thinking
- Establishing Work/Life Balance
- Smart Stress Management/Conclusion
Course objectives include learning to rate your personal stress, managing thoughts and actions to reduce stress, and taking personal responsibility for positive change.
Also offered is Stress Management 101, which is a one-hour stand alone class that covers recognizing characteristics of stress, managing stress, and learning to change your responses to stress.
We all get angry from time to time and for many different reasons, but when we let our anger get out of control we can experience some very serious consequences at work, at home, and in the community. This Four-Week Anger Management Class will help you identify where your anger comes from, what your triggers are, and how you can effectively manage your anger so you can achieve your goals without hurting or violating the rights of others.
The course consists of:
- Identifying Anger and Its Causes
- Identifying Physical and Emotional Cues
- Triggers—What Sets You Off?
- Effects of Anger on Your Relationships
- Techniques to Learn to Recognize and Prevent Anger
- How to Cope with Those Things in Life that Cause Anger
To achieve the maximum result from this class, and to get the class certificate of completion, one must attend all four sessions.
Unmanaged conflict has caused many hardships in the workplace and at home. It can cause people to make poor decisions, missions to fail, and families to separate. Yet, conflict is inevitable. This workshop helps people to manage conflict by examining their attitudes and behaviors when faced with conflicting situations; practicing skills that prevent conflict from escalating; and working with others to solve problems, allowing people to grow, missions to succeed, and families to strengthen.
This course is one hour long and is an activity-rich course. At the completion of this course, participants should be able to apply collaborative problem-solving techniques to create positive outcomes from conflict situations.
